A Dream Relized?
In honor of the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's death, I created a guerrilla art installation for the evening. On April 4, 2008 I projected a bootleg video of the entire "I have a dream speech" along with audio during Phoenix's First Friday Art Walk on the front of Roosevelt Community Church. Thousands upon thousands of people converge on the arts districts for a monthly cultural gathering of art lovers, revilers, and gawkers. I was interested in seeing what the community's reaction would be. I asked people if they had ever watched the entire speech; almost all said no. I asked if people thought the dream was realized; almost all said no. However, almost all clapped and cheered at the end of Dr. King's speech. Was it hope or was it a dream realized?
"A Dream Realized?", audio+video installation/existing building/people, dimensions varied, April 2008. Photograph documentation of the installation was by Brenda Bombino (c). Special thanks to Bishop Ortega for the help and love.

Mixed media pieces
These are some mixed media pieces that i have done over the past couple of years...

"Womb". plexi glass and Lightjet Endura print. 24 x 36 inches. January 2005. (sold)
Between light and dark, life can take hold... I was interested in exploring the full extent of what it means to have a child. This is one of my proudest pieces.

"Home" . wood, metal, rock, light. approx. 21 x 51 inches. 2005.
This is my idea of home... the 4 rocks are my family, the wood is my "home", the light is God's grace. It is meant to be temporary and mobile, even somewhat fragile.

"red Belly". plexi glass and Lightjet Endura print. 48 x 60 inches. January 2005.
This is also an exploration into the body's ability to create life. I made this work large and with a glossy finish. When you look into the piece, you can see your reflection and you will merge with the red Belly.

"Together as One". fabric and thread. 72 x 96 inches (6 x 8 feet). 2000.
I created this piece right before I got married. It symbolises a man and woman's union in this life. I'll admit it is Rothko'isc...

"Narrow Road". aluminum and Lightjet Endura print. 40 x 18 inches. January 2005.
Life can give you a wide path to follow. Sometimes the narrow road is the better choice.

Life

"Life" . charcoal and pastel on Arches paper. 30 x 22 inches. June 2007. (sold)
This piece is a bit of a departure from the simplicity of the other entries in this series. It has more color because it is based on Romans 6. Please take the time to read the passage, then look at the image again. It is my hope that you see through the words and the color to see what true life is all about. btw-If you have not received Jesus Christ as Lord, this image will not transcend its created intent.

Peace
"Peace" . charcoal and pastel on Arches paper. 30 x 22 inches. May 2007. (sold)
For years I searched and prayed for peace. I was doing it all wrong. Isaiah 26:3 is helping me learn the right way to have peace.
In this work, there are three spheres balanced on a blue line and blue sphere (the blue is the "peace"). The spheres are 3 different shades (very light shades at that). This is the renewing of my spirit as my burdens are lightened. Not necessarily lightened in reality, but rather easier to deal and cope with. The harmony of my spirit is in the process of resting and knowing peace rather than searching for peace.

Love
"Love" . charcoal and pastel on Arches paper. 30 x 22 inches. May 2007. (sold)
Why am I here? What is this existence all about? Why do I seek answers to my questions?....
This work is an examination of John 3:16,17. Everyone knows v.16, but we have to really think about v.17 in the context of true love to understand the "why".
skip this next part if you don't want me to point out what the work exposes...
the world has fallen. deep and dark despair weighs it down. the slow crumble and obviously decay offer no hope. but... one drop of blood out of Love can redeem it all...

Hope
"Hope". charcoal and pastel on Arches paper . 30 x 22 inches. May 2007. (sold)
This work is based of the bible verse of Hebrews 11:1. I have created a visual path way to the bases of faith. in this work the yellow symbolizes hope and its journey to the masses. allow your self the time to get lost in the negative space and then find your way out through the maze in the masses.
side note:
this work is apart of a new series i have been contemplating for some time know as part of my overall interest - visual relationships to sort out reality. this was the perfect time to get it out. i have been needing to let out some of the frustration i have come across as i work to master my technical abilities (drawing and working with oils).

Lost Innocence

"Lost Innocence" . oil on panel . 17h x 19w. 2006/2007
the balloon seems inviting and is innocent enough... but, on closer examination the object is heavy (red is a symbol of danger) and and not translucent like a typical balloon. further more the "string" is not really a string, but a vine with thorns on is. this heavy "object" is set against a deep green back ground (symbolizes youth lost).
this work explores our fascination with grabing at what is playful and innocent, but could really be more than we anticipated.
it is only fitting that my first post acknowledges my greatest art creation.... a creation that is so grand and amazing it will never be surpassed by fame or fortune.... my family. i am blessed to be the husband of an encouraging wife and 2 beautiful daughters. thank you Jesus!
back again
for some time i have been away from sharing my art with all of you. some of you have been asking to see what i have been up to... here it is. feed back, commentary, criticism, are all welcome. - kj
